Shoppers switching from Tescos to Aldi/Lidl


Aldi and Lidl saw the greatest growth in the grocery sector at 20.2% and 15.6% respectively according to data spanning the 12 weeks to July 11 when compared to figures from a year ago. Aldi and Lidl now account for 6.1% of the total grocery market while Waitrose increased its share of the overall spend from 4.1% to 4.3%.

Rail travel increases as petrol prices rise


The degree of substitution between rail and car travel has been highlighted in figures just published by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC). These show that passenger numbers on the railways grew by 4.8% in the first three months of 2011, which meant growth over the financial year of 2010/11 of 6.6%.
