UK economic growth confirmed at 0.5% by official data

Growth in gross domestic product was confirmed at 0.5%, compared with a 0.1% expansion in the second quarter.

The second quarter was especially weak because activity was interrupted by the extra holiday for the royal wedding.

Growth in the third quarter was largely driven by an increase in firms' inventories.

UK to have sluggish growth in 2010

The UK economy will remain stuck in the doldrums this year with growth of 1% or less predicted in 2010, a leading forecaster has warned.
The Ernst & Young ITEM Club, which uses the Treasury's economic model for its forecasts, said the immediate prospects for the UK were "dismal".
An export-led recovery was unlikely to emerge until 2011 and consumer spending was too weak for a recovery, it said.

Service sector growth hits 3 year high

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) index rose to 58.4 from 54.5 the previous month, its highest since January 2007. The index allayed fears among some economists that the UK could slip back into recession in the current quarter. The service sector is a vital component of the UK economy. Any index score above 50 indicates growth.

How to grow the economy

Tutor2u notes on Economic growth theories. Over the years, economists from different schools of thought have had plenty to say on what really drives economic growth for an economy. In these notes some of the ideas are reviewed. In particular we consider the importance of supply-side factors in determining the trend rate of growth for countries competing in the global economy.
